The Author of the book, Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain explains how we have some control over our brains. He explains that our neural pathways are just like physical paths in the forest. If we keep walking in the same place we develop an obvious path. This is what happens when one views pornography. You create pathways that are easier and easier to travel on. At the same time we can avoid those paths and they overgrow with weeds and new trees over time. If we change our thoughts and tell our minds that we can't go on those paths that is also training our brain and it becomes natural to avoid those paths. That is what happens when we bounce our eyes away from an image or a person that we are viewing impurely. Over time it becomes natural to turn our thoughts to things that are upright and pure.
This takes work and will not happen on its own as our minds are efficient and look for the shortest and most enjoyable path to get results which is why one gets addicted in the first place.
