1. Accountability is also the mechanical procedures you put in place to help you succeed. You should never have a computer screen that is not in view of others. This will not only help you be accountable but also build trust with those around you who can see what you are viewing. Never have a device in a private area that would allow you to view pornography.
2. Get an accountability partner Ideas for accountability partners
3. Remove Access. Just how important is that internet connection at home? Some students who are serious about winning over pornography addiction leave their laptop at home and use computers in the computer lab in order to provide accountability and remove access to pornography. This is inconvenient but it also demonstrates to others and builds trust as you make serious choices to remove access.
4. What are you missing in your life that this addiction takes the place of? Often healthy relationships are lacking and people fill this void with these false relationships. There is an imaginary sense that people have that they have a relationship with these people in the images. Some would call this an emotional affair. Bolster your real relationships to be proactive in combating false relationships. Bolstering your relationship with God is part of this proactive process.
5. At a certain point it comes down to making appropriate decisions. Only you can make those tough decisions about your next action. With addictions it is more than just willpower at stake as there are biological processes that are also affecting your desires. The key is to put enough measures in place that will help us do the next right thing. Put biological advantages in place that will help you succeed. 6. Concentrate on doing right things. If we fill ourselves with light there is no room for darkness. If you are concentrating on doing the right things; building relationships and serving others, you'll not have time for the wrong things.
7. Don't give up. Satan isn't very smart but when he learns something that works he does it over and over. If he can get you to live in shame you don't have the energy to do the right things. You will fail in your journey but the one who wins is the one who continues to get back up and do the next right thing. Don't plan to fail but don't let failure consume you.
8. Believe God can heal. God has enough grace for your failures. Jesus died for you knowing that you would make these mistakes. Read books like What's So Amazing About Grace? to learn more about God's grace.
9. The best time to end an addiction is right now. You don't need to view more pornographic images as you have many stored in your memory already but adding more will only increase your problem. By not feeding your sensual appetite you are already changing the neural pathways in your brain.
10. Confession is the first step in seeking the help you will need to succeed. Confessing demonstrates that you are putting your desire to change into action. "Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide...and you forgave me! All my guilt is gone." Psalm 32:5
11. Exercise/Diet/Sleep, the three biggies. Take care of yourself by getting enough exercise, eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep. When you feel good and feel good about yourself you'll have more stamina to resist temptation.
12. Memorize and Meditate (M&M). Memorizing scripture and meditating on verses such as Psalm 51:10-12, "Create in me a pure heart O God..." See the entry on this site
13. Be proactive in helping others on their journey of healing. This is another of the tasks of filling yourself with light so there is no room for darkness. If you are doing enough right you won't be struggling with doing the wrong things.
