Don't dispair but don't put more in there

I was talking to a student recently and he was praying for the Lord to take away the pornographic images stored in his memory so he could be done with this addiction.  The Lord could do this but in my experience He often stays out of the way of the natural laws he has put in place.  The memory that we appreciate on the upcoming Calculus exam is the same memory that stores the images.  The exception is that memories stored with emotion attached are stored with a special flag on them so that they are more easily recalled.  That memory of a time that our life was at stake is stuck there better than the math formula because of the emotion attached. "I could have died!" Unfortunately pornographic images are stored with an emotional connection as well.

Current research on the elasticity of the brain demonstrates that we have the ability to change neural pathways.  With a concentrated effort to take thoughts captive and not dwell on pornographic images these images will fade so that they don't affect your everyday life.  But this is a process and will likely take many years.

So what’s the use?  Why even bother if it is going to take 10 to 20 years to heal?  There is no time like the present to end an addiction.  Start now with wholesome, pure input and stick with it.  This is a winnable battle but you need to know the strength of your foe so that you don’t give up too early.

Am I healed because I no longer view pornographic images? This is a lifelong process that is best to start now.   http://www.kicksexaddiction.com/2010/11/the-addictive-cycle-fantasy.html
